Welcome to Day 3 of our Route 66 journey. Today we’re leaving the pine forests of Flagstaff and heading east to Albuquerque, with a lot of open country and a few wonderfully strange roadside surprises in between. We’ll pass Winona, a tiny place made famous by the Route 66 song. We’ll find dinosaurs at Meteor City, a corner immortalized in another song in Winslow, and the colorful hills of the Painted Desert. If you have extra time, Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest National Park make remarkable detours. Then we’ll cross into New Mexico, where Gallup, Grants, and the communities of Laguna Pueblo add new stories to the road. We’ll drive surviving sections of historic Route 66 where they fit our route and use Interstate 40 to connect them. Some of the best moments today are small ones: an old sign, a quiet trading post, or a bend in the road that still feels much as it did decades ago. Take your time. Albuquerque will be there when we arrive.

Pass through small towns that tell stories of early American travel, mining booms, and westward dreams. As you descend from the desert’s vast openness toward the bustling urban sprawl, keep an eye out for classic diners, vintage gas stations, and the unmistakable charm that makes this stretch one of the most celebrated on the entire route. By the time you arrive in San Bernardino, the official birthplace of Route 66, you’ll have journeyed through a tapestry of history, culture, and landscape — all tied together by the enduring spirit of the Mother Road.

Today, we're beginning at the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica and heading east toward San Bernardino, following the Mother Road through Los Angeles and the communities along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Now, if you're already east of Los Angeles, you can begin your Route 66 journey with our next tour starting in San Bernardino. But if you're anywhere near Santa Monica, we highly recommend starting right here. There's a reason. For travelers historically heading west, this was the final stretch of Route 66 — the last chapter of an incredible journey across America before reaching the Pacific. And that means there's a lot of Route 66 history packed into the road we're about to travel. We'll begin at the famous western terminus in Santa Monica, travel through Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, follow historic sections of the Mother Road through Pasadena and along Foothill Boulevard, and discover some wonderful pieces of roadside Americana along the way. We'll see historic motels and service stations, unusual roadside architecture, monuments that actually predate Route 66, and even the place where one of the world's most famous fast-food stories began. And as we travel east, you'll notice the character of the road beginning to change. The dense streets of Los Angeles gradually give way to the classic Route 66 corridor that will eventually carry us toward the wide-open landscapes of the American Southwest. This tour ends in San Bernardino, but our Route 66 journey certainly doesn't. From there, simply start the next UCPlaces Route 66 tour and we'll continue heading east together. On this driving tour, we'll explore Canberra from some of its best viewpoints and drive through the monumental heart of the city. We'll begin high above the capital at Mount Ainslie Lookout, where you'll get your first look at the remarkable geometry that defines Canberra. From there, we'll descend toward the Australian War Memorial, drive along ceremonial Anzac Parade, cross Lake Burley Griffin, and pass many of Australia's most important national institutions, including the National Library, National Gallery, Old Parliament House and, of course, Australian Parliament House. We'll also explore Canberra's diplomatic neighbourhood, where embassies and high commissions from around the world sometimes bring a little of their own country's architecture to Australia's capital. Along the way, we'll tell you the stories behind the places you're seeing, explain why Canberra looks the way it does, and introduce you to a few things you might otherwise drive straight past without noticing. And we'll finish where we began — with a view from above. This time from Dairy Farmers Hill Lookout in the National Arboretum, where you can look back across much of the city we've just explored. Welcome to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia’s second-oldest capital city and a place where colonial history, a beautiful waterfront and wild mountain scenery all come together. On this self-guided driving tour, we’ll explore the many different sides of Hobart. We’ll pass historic sandstone buildings and reminders of Tasmania’s convict past, travel along the colourful waterfront, visit Salamanca Place and Battery Point, and follow the River Derwent through some of the city’s most beautiful neighbourhoods. Along the way, we’ll discover stories of explorers, convicts, sailors and settlers, see Australia’s oldest continuously operating brewery, and take a short detour to the historic Mount Nelson Signal Station for some fantastic views. And then we’ll save the best for last. We’ll leave the city behind and climb through the forests of Wellington Park, following the winding road all the way to the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington, more than 1,200 metres—or around 4,000 feet—above sea level. From there, weather permitting, you’ll be rewarded with extraordinary views over Hobart, the River Derwent and southeastern Tasmania. Welcome to Adelaide, South Australia, and get ready for a driving tour that will show you just how much this city and its surroundings have to offer. We'll begin in the heart of Adelaide, exploring its historic streets, grand public squares, cultural landmarks and beautiful North Adelaide before leaving the city behind and climbing into the Adelaide Hills. And that's where the drive really changes. We'll follow winding mountain roads through forests, vineyards, orchards and small Hills communities, visit the historic German town of Hahndorf, pass through beautiful Stirling, and climb toward Mount Lofty Summit, where you'll have the opportunity to stop and take in one of the best views over Adelaide. But we're not finished there. From high in the Hills, we'll make our way all the way back down, cross Adelaide from east to west, and finish our journey beside the water in Glenelg, where the beach, Jetty Road and the famous Glenelg Jetty will be waiting for us. So today we're going from city streets to mountain roads, historic towns, wine country and finally the sea. It's a big day, but it's going to be a good one. G'day and welcome to Perth, Western Australia! Get ready for a fantastic drive that will take us from the heart of the city all the way to the Indian Ocean and historic Fremantle. We'll begin by exploring central Perth, passing some of its most important historic landmarks before reaching the beautiful Swan River waterfront and Elizabeth Quay. From there, we'll climb into spectacular Kings Park, where some of the best views of Perth are waiting for us. Then we'll leave downtown behind and follow the Swan River through leafy neighbourhoods, passing the famous Blue Boat House and the University of Western Australia before making our way toward the coast. And that's when the scenery changes again. We'll reach the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean at Cottesloe Beach, follow the coast south, and eventually arrive in Fremantle, or Freo as the locals call it. There we'll discover convict history, grand Victorian architecture, Fremantle Prison, the historic Town Hall and the old waterfront before heading right out into the harbour for our grand finale at the South Mole Lighthouse. Today, we're going to explore Brisbane from behind the wheel, discovering a city built around the twists and turns of the Brisbane River. We'll begin beside one of Australia's most famous sporting grounds, The Gabba, before heading to the riverfront at Kangaroo Point and crossing the iconic Story Bridge. From there, we'll explore the lively streets of Fortitude Valley, the leafy neighbourhood of New Farm, and the historic woolstores of Teneriffe. We'll then make our way into the heart of downtown Brisbane, passing historic churches, grand government buildings, City Hall and the City Botanic Gardens before crossing the river into South Bank, home to Brisbane's cultural precinct and some of the city's most popular attractions. But we're not stopping there. We'll head west past Suncorp Stadium, climb through the hills of Paddington, discover Brisbane's classic Queenslander houses, and gradually leave the city behind as we make our way toward Mount Coot-tha. And we've saved the best view for last. Our grand finale will take us all the way to the Mount Coot-tha Summit Lookout, where Brisbane, the river and the surrounding landscape will be spread out below us. Today, we’re going to discover one of Australia’s most exciting and diverse cities, from its grand historic buildings and hidden laneways to world-famous sporting venues, beautiful gardens, waterfront neighbourhoods and some fantastic views of the Melbourne skyline. We’ll begin right here in the heart of the city, passing landmarks like Queen Victoria Market, the Old Melbourne Gaol, Parliament House and the magnificent Royal Exhibition Building. We’ll explore Melbourne’s famous sporting and cultural precincts, cross the Yarra River, pass the Shrine of Remembrance and Royal Botanic Gardens, and then make our way towards Albert Park Lake. From there, the character of the tour changes completely as we head for the coast. We’ll cruise through lively St Kilda, pass its beach, historic theatre and famous Luna Park, and then follow Port Phillip south through Elwood before finishing at colourful Brighton Beach and its iconic bathing boxes. Along the way, I’ll share some of the stories, history and fun facts that make Melbourne such a fascinating city, while pointing out plenty of places you may want to come back and explore on foot later. Welcome to Granbury, Texas! And first things first: it's Gran-bury, not Cranberry. There are no cranberries involved in the name. Granbury was named after General Hiram B. Granbury, a Confederate officer who was killed during the Civil War in 1864. He never actually lived here, but when the town was established a couple of years after his death, it was named in his honor. Later in our tour, we'll pass the cemetery where he is buried and tell you more about his story. But Granbury has plenty of other stories to tell. On this tour, we'll begin in the heart of its beautifully preserved historic downtown, where nineteenth-century buildings surround the Hood County Courthouse. We'll pass an old jail, a pioneer cabin, and a railroad depot before heading into the Texas countryside. From there, the drive becomes considerably more scenic. We'll follow part of the Comanche Peak Loop, travel along quiet country roads, see the distinctive Comanche Peak, and make our way toward Lake Granbury and the Brazos River. We'll even point out a great observation point where you can stop, stretch your legs, and take some photos. We'll also visit Acton, where the widow of legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett is buried, before making our way back toward Granbury and finishing right on the water at Granbury City Beach Park. Along the way, you'll hear stories about pioneers, soldiers, outlaws, and even a man who claimed he was Jesse James long after Jesse James was supposedly dead.
