Who Was Hāna?
So, who exactly was Hāna?

Well, Hāna wasn’t a person. In Hawaiian, hana means “work” or “activity,” although the precise origin of the town’s name has been interpreted in different ways.

Long before this famous highway existed, Hāna was an important center of Hawaiian life. Its fertile land, abundant rain, and protected coastline supported thriving communities that farmed taro, caught fish, and traveled mainly by canoe or along footpaths.

During the 1500s, the great chief Piʻilani brought much of Maui under unified rule. He also developed an extensive trail that circled the island, parts of which became known as the King’s Highway.

Control of Maui later became the subject of fierce battles. In 1790, Kamehameha I invaded the island as part of his campaign to unite the Hawaiian Islands into a single kingdom. Maui eventually came under his rule, but Hāna’s isolation allowed it to preserve much of its traditional character long after other parts of the island began changing.

And even today, after all the visitors who make the journey here, Hāna still feels like a world of its own.
