Sims House — a surviving Queen Anne / Colonial Revival style historic home
Welcome to the Sims House on your right at 513 N State St— a beautiful example of early 20th-century architecture and one of Jackson’s most charming historic homes. Built around 1905, this elegant residence captures the spirit of a growing capital city that was finding its identity in the years after Reconstruction.

Its design blends classic Southern style with Victorian influences — notice the wraparound porch, tall windows, and ornate detailing that speak to an era of craftsmanship and pride. The Sims family, early civic leaders in Jackson, once lived here, and their home became a gathering spot for community discussions and local decision-making.

Today, the house stands as a quiet witness to the transformation of Jackson — from a small railroad town to a vibrant cultural and political center. As you look around, imagine the horse-drawn carriages once passing through these streets, and the sounds of the city slowly modernizing around this graceful old home.

Grand Mississippi State Capitol
Get ready to turn left, but first on you right stands the magnificent Mississippi State Capitol — one of the most stunning statehouses in the South and the beating heart of Mississippi’s government since 1903.

Built during a time of progress and optimism, this Beaux-Arts masterpiece cost exactly one million dollars — money that came from back taxes owed by the Illinois Central Railroad. Not a bad deal for a building this grand!

Take in the impressive dome rising nearly 200 feet, topped with a 15-foot bronze eagle. Inside, sunlight filters through stained-glass windows onto marble staircases and hand-carved woodwork, while the House and Senate chambers still echo with the voices that shaped the state’s history.

The Capitol isn’t just a place of politics — it’s a symbol of Mississippi’s resilience and ambition. From civil rights struggles to modern legislative milestones, this building has seen it all. Even if you don’t step inside, its exterior tells a powerful story of a state forever evolving — proud, complex, and full of character.
