Church of Agion Anargyron
Our first stop of the day on our right is the Church of Agion Anargyron. Dedicated to the Saints Cosmas and Damian, also known as the “Holy Unmercenaries”. These saints were known for their healing abilities and their charitable nature, offering medical care without asking for payment, hence the name “Anargyroi,” meaning “without silver” or “without payment.”
This small but serene church holds a special place in the religious life of Paphos. Located near the heart of the town, it serves a peaceful retreat where locals and visitors alike come to offer prayers and seek spiritual solace. The interior is adorned with traditional Orthodox icons, creating a reverent atmosphere typical of Cypriot churches. The simplicity of the design enhances its spiritual presence, with the soothing ambiance inviting quiet reflection.
Although not as large or ornate as other churches in the area, the Church of Agion Anargyron is significant for its connection to healing and compassion. Many people visit the church, especially on the feast day of Saints Cosmas and Damian, which is celebrated on November 1st.

History of Cyprus
As we begin our walking tour through Paphos, Cyprus I think it’s important to touch on the history of this amazing city. It is a place stepped in thousands of years of rich history, myth, and culture, stretching back to the neolithic period. In antiquity, there were two main Paphos cities: Old Paphos (Kouklia), a center for Aphrodite worship, and New Paphos, founded around 320 BCE. The latter, located near the modern city, became the administrative capital of Cyprus under the Ptolemaic dynasty and later the Roman Empire. During Roman times, Paphos flourished and became a prominent cultural and political center. Many Roman villas were built here, adorned with exquisite mosaics that survive to this day, which we will see later in our tour!
One of the city’s defining moments in history came in 45 CE, when the apostles Paul and Barnabas visited Paphos during their missionary journey. This event is significant in CHristian history because the Roman governor Sergius Paulis converted to Christianity, making Paphos one of the first places in the word where a high-ranking Roman official embraced the new faith.
In more modern times, Paphos remained a small town until Cyprus gained independence in 1960. Since then, it has grown into one of the island’s most popular tourist destinations. It is not only a city of ancient wonders but a lively space that we will get to witness today.
