Right now you should be standing in front of the Washington Monument Lodge. This is a great place to grab a map, use the restroom, refill your water, and get ready to go. When you’re all set-- with the building in front of you, start on the path to the right of the Lodge to head up toward the base of the Washington Monument. On your way, I’ll give you a primer on the history of Washington DC! This is a bit of a long story to start, so feel free to walk slow, take your time and take lots of pictures as you head up to the base of the Washington Monument!

Now that you’ve climbed to the top of the hill, and you’re standing near the base of the Washington Monument, let’s get oriented. You should have a great view all across the National Mall. If you look to the East, you'll be looking at the Capitol Building. That's the white building with the large dome all the way on the other end of the grassy expanse. If you look to the west, you'll see the Lincoln Memorial. That's the white flat building with the columns out front. This two mile stretch, with the Lincoln Memorial on one end, the Washington Monument in the middle, and the capital building on the other end, is known as the National Mall.
