Karakoy District
Right behind us is The Galata Bridge, connecting Karaköy to the Eminönü district. It offers stunning views of the Golden Horn, a natural harbor that has played a significant role in the city's history. We explored the bridge as our last Place on part one, and now on the other side, we’ll get moving into Karakoy, part of the European side of Istanbul.

Karaköy has a rich history dating back to the Byzantine era when it was known as Galata. The district played a crucial role in trade and commerce due to its strategic location on the Golden Horn. Over the centuries, it has been a hub for trade, transportation, and finance.

Karaköy has long been a commercial and financial center, hosting numerous banks, businesses, and trading activities. Its proximity to the historical Galata Tower and the iconic Galata Bridge adds to the district's charm.

In recent years, Karaköy has undergone significant urban renewal and gentrification, transforming it into a trendy and vibrant neighborhood. Old warehouses and buildings have been repurposed into art galleries, boutique hotels, restaurants, and cafes, attracting a younger and more cosmopolitan crowd.

Karaköy has become a hub for contemporary art and culture, with numerous art galleries and cultural spaces showcasing the works of local and international artists. The district's artistic atmosphere and creative energy contribute to its appeal.

The neighborhood boasts a diverse culinary scene, offering a wide range of dining options, from traditional Turkish eateries to trendy cafes and international restaurants. Visitors can explore the local food markets and sample a variety of delicious dishes.

Karaköy is well-connected in terms of transportation. The Karaköy Ferry Terminal provides ferry services across the Bosphorus to various parts of Istanbul, while the district is also served by tram and bus lines.

Bankalar Caddesi (Banks Street)
We will now be making a left on Bankalar Caddesi, translated as "Banks Street" in English, a historic street located here in the Karaköy district of Istanbul. It holds significant historical importance as it was once the financial center of the Ottoman Empire, housing the headquarters of several major Ottoman and foreign banks.

Bankalar Caddesi gained prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it became the heart of the Ottoman financial district. Many banks, both Ottoman and foreign, established their headquarters along this street during a period of economic and financial expansion.

The street is characterized by its impressive neoclassical and eclectic architecture, reflecting the styles prevalent during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The buildings along Bankalar Caddesi served not only as banks but also as symbols of financial power and prestige.

Some of the most notable banks that once had their headquarters on Bankalar Caddesi include the Ottoman Bank, Credit Lyonnais Ottoman (later Türkiye İş Bankası), Deutsche Bank, and others. These institutions played a crucial role in the economic life of the Ottoman Empire.

While the financial district has shifted over the years, Bankalar Caddesi remains an important historical and cultural site. Efforts have been made to preserve and restore the architectural heritage of the street, showcasing the grandeur of the banking era.

Visitors to Istanbul can take a walking tour along Bankalar Caddesi to appreciate the historic buildings and learn about the financial history of the city. Additionally, the Ottoman Bank Museum, located on the street, provides insights into the banking history of Istanbul.

While the street's role as the primary financial center has diminished, some of the buildings on Bankalar Caddesi have been repurposed for different uses. Today, you can find offices, shops, and cultural spaces in some of these historic structures.

Bankalar Caddesi is a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and those interested in exploring Istanbul's economic and financial heritage. It offers a unique blend of the old and the new, showcasing the city's dynamic evolution over the years.
